It looks like a exhaust valve with who knows what it is on it. Do you use fuel additives?

no I use Phillips 66 pretty much exclusively and 91-93 octane always

yeah, I know..just having a little fun with it..chemical corrosion was my first thought, maybe tuning, leak..???..I will say we have used Chevron / Texaco exclusively for as long as I can remember, unless it's not readily available when we need gas..I think Techron is legit stuff, not snake oil..but I can't say that pic is fuel related

I am in the process of educating myself on doing the top end and saw that on a scope. the cylinders look like the rings are leaking pretty good.
I am doing a leak down this weekend to give me a better idea of a timeline
she does run good though. a little over a quart every 5k

had a spark plug break off at the head threads..this is 57,000 miles so was pleased to see not much carbon

All stock engine (tune, etc.)? Not uncommon for a stock engine running a lean EPA tune. That is the hottest part of the engine. It is more common with fuel additives, as mentioned.
