My girl has a 2015 Tri-Glide Ultra with 9500 miles. I test rode it after I installed new slip-on's, and encountered a wobble sort of speak with the front forks/steering It went away quick but I was able to recreate it again at slow speed going in a straight line by sort of jiggling the handle bars. And again it went away. My question I and I suspect that maybe the steering dampener is starting to go bad or possible issue with the steering its self. Any thoughts on this and if the dampener is going bad where to get a good replacement other than Harley who wants 500+$ for a new one. No mods done to rake and steering head appears to be intact with no up and down or side to side play.
Reminded me of the real old days when idler arm bushings wore out on my 1971 Corolla, my first car not by choice. LOL wanted the 69 boss 351 that was for sale 3 houses down..
Remove the the damper and do a neck bearing test. If the damper has any resistance it’s probably still fine. As said above, get the wheel balance checked. Is it’s a wobble side to side then it’s probably not the tire balance.
referred to as Fall Away to see how much resistance the steering has when swept from side to side and they also do a push pull front to rear on the front wheel to see if there is any back and forth slop / play in the steering head bearings ..if so they will tighten or in excessive wear conditions will replace ... service schedule calls for this inspection at 25,000 mile intervals
If the steering damper is not leaking and has resistance it is probably okay and something else is causing it. Trikes will wander a bit depending on the tire, make sure the tire is inflated correctly and check for cracks between the tread.
Alignment could also be a factor.
9,500 miles is not much and if you have the original from tire on it is 8 years old and may need to be replaced.
I'd take it to a indy mechanic and have it checked out. Could be as simple as a tire, which if older than 5-6 years should be replaced anyway. Or maybe a front wheel bearing. My softail would develop a shimmy on de-acceleration when you close the throttle. I took it in to have the tires replaced and he found a bad front wheel bearing. Not sure how shaking the bars would cause that though. I doubt the steering damper is bad at that mileage.
