Hey guys, Ive got only 1,500 miles on my bike, changed the oil at 750 miles and since then Ive added 12oz to keep it at the halfway mark. This is my fourth Harley and yeah, they use a little when new but this seems a bit excessive. Thats 8oz short of a quart in 1,500 miles. Any thoughts? After how many miles are you guys seeing any usage stop?

Acceptable oil consumption in a Milwaukee-Eight engine is 1 L (1 qt) for every 2,400 km (1,500 mi). Customers may not realize that all engines have some normal rate of oil consumption.

my experience has taught me they tend to consume more when new then settles in to a very normal manageable rate...I just did my 1K on my new twin cooled 117 and it never budged a drop, same with my wife's 2020 CVO 117..both our first twin cooled Harleys..wonder if they manage ET so much better than oil cooled or air cooled models that volatility is greatly reduced...have always broken them all in properly..I'm considering just sticking with the factory fill HD360 and Formula+ combo on this new 117

I realize that all engines use some oil; they have to. Im really asking the group if when new, how many miles till it settles down.
You asked two questions. I answered the first one. My 114 settled down after about 3K miles, but it still uses more oil than my 103, which is practically none.
Fill it full when hot as the manual describes, then run till it's a quart low and see what you get. My 114 does not get a quart low over the 5000 mile recommended oil change interval. I have about 8 ounces more to go. This is the first H-D I've owned where I don't have to add between changes.
I have a 114 - about 13K on it now. My first oil change was around 900 miles. I changed again at 5K. Then, since I was planning a trip this past summer, I did my 10K inspection around 9600.
When the bike comes out of storage sometime in April, I will put her in for an oil change. May even do the 15K checkup. I do check my oil often and have not experienced the loss you have.
