Default Cam Question

Looking for some help on a cam swap. Bike is a 2022 LRST with a 117 motor.

Just swap the cam to a S&S 475. Has Bassani Road Rage exhaust. It was dyno tuned.

Specs said power should be made from 1,500-4,000 rpm. Really doesn't come in until around 3,000. Not my riding style anymore.

What would you suggest for a cam for low end HP and torque while keeping the exhaust.

Thanks,

Go to Fuelmoto website look at the different cam charts, it will give you a good idea of what differences the cams are. I believe the WM8-22X was really strong down low

Woods 22XD would be closer to where you want. The 475 is more I’d a mid range cam.

Fuel Moto would be an excellent source of advice. Give them a call.

Thanks,
If you want a cam with a lot of low end and still have the sound, the Red Shift 468 is probably what you want. The exhaust you run will influence the low end torque substantially.

Here is a chart for a M8 114" with the SS475 with a 2 into 1 Jackpot exhaust. i

Here is an M8 114" with 2:1:2 exhaust that has the SS475. The first bike is crossing the 120 ft/lb mark at 3250 while the bike with the 2:1:2 is crossing the 120 ft/lb mark at about 2800.

Here is the first bike with a different cam, a Cycle-Rama 483. You can see it makes power much quicker. It is crossing the 120 ft/lb mark at around 2700 rpm. I actually have this cam, I loaned it to Fuelmoto for the test. It is available should you want it.

Here is the 2:1:2 bike with the RS468.

The SS475 cam is a mid-range cam. I have known people to love it and some that tried it and didn't like it. Some of it has to do with the technician that did the dyno tune also. I have had crappy tunes from someone while another tech did much better.

I hope this helps you. Choosing a cam can be confusing and if you don't get it right, it starts to get expensive.

lots of good info above..out of curiosity I looked at the OEM performance specs of the ST powertrain is it is designed / intended to run best at rpm range you don't care to operate in much..for instance, the specs on the 25 LRST state peak torque at 4000 rpms and hp at 5000, whereas for comparison sake the Heritage peak torque is at a lowly 2500 rpms and hp at 4600..since you state "Really doesn't come in until around 3,000. Not my riding style anymore." if you like to ride in a more relaxed and laid back fashion like many, the ST being more of a hot rod in general, maybe a more suitable model is worth considering..yeah I know, this comes at a MUCH higher cost than a simple cam change but maybe you'd end up happier overall

I'd try a lollypop in the exhaust before I spent the $ on a new cam and tune. The S&S 475 is extremely exhaust sensitive. This was with a Sawiki Speed 2-1, very open. We added a lollypop (DK customs sells a pre made one) and it was night/day difference in feel & performance.

The 2025 LRST is a bit different than the '22 LRST as far as the stock power band goes. The 2022 has peak torque of 125 ft/lb @ 3500 and 103 hp @ 4750. The 2025 is rated at 128 ft/lb @ 4000 and 114 hp @ 5000, so the earlier models might feel a little more torquey. I really haven't noticed my 2025 not pulling at low rpm, though.

Earlier this year you shared a chart with me of a Gen 2 Softail that had a TTS 185 cam and a Tab muffler with the performance baffle. Do you think a lollipop would have helped the low end torque on that bike and maybe resulted in additional horsepower?

Yes, but that bike was traded before further testing could be done.
