Got hit, now what? (chicago burbs)
Now my ride is wrecked, not too bad, but still wrecked. They have some BS fly by night company, and my ride will be down for a few weeks. They give me a rental car??? WTF, it was a Harley, not a damn jap sub compact. Shouldn't they be reimbursing me for a bike i am not riding? I'm laid off for the next few weeks, and and I have all day everyday to ride. I have trips planned too. What can I do? I am thinking of taking it to Heritage Harley (supposed to be the best in the area). Anybody have a suggestion? My insurance is through Progressive, and they want to handle the whole claim. That's great, but will i see a rate increase because of it?
From what I can tell, my fairing outer is shot, right side of the fork, right rotor, possibly front wheel?, fender, brackets that hold the fairing to the front, turn signal. Its a 06 Streetglide. Do I assume they'll replace all the damaged pieces with new?
I would find a bike rental outlet first, then talk to progressive about renting a bike. Unless your policy specifically excludes it, or maxes your coverge out below the cost of a bike, they should put you in something comperable to what you have. If the other person is at fault, and their insurance is willing to step up, then they owe you a comperable vehicle and there is no limit on cost. They may try the "We owe you basic transportation" line as they all are leaning to nowdays, but you can argue that point, often with good results.
Your company will pay and then go after the other carrier - and it may be the easiest, fastest way to get back on the road - but if the other carrier is willing to step up, give them a try - you can always go back on your own if you have to - but you risk delays. If you use your own, you will be stuck with paying your deductible until progressive gets it back for you.
Even the smaller companies often sub out the damage appraisal to an independent company and the knowledge of that person is key. Have your repairer look it over good and have the independent appraiser or the Progressive appraiser look at it there with them.
It isn't so much that they are going to try to screw you, but bikes are worse than cars when it comes to getting knowledgable people to work with. They will do really dumb ****, thinking they are doing the right thing by you and the insurance company.
A couple things to remember - the first adjuster you are dealing with is probably telling you the truth when they say that cannot authorize a rental bike instead of a car - but their boss can, or that person's boss can. The one thing they do not want to hear is that if they do not do the right thing, you will report the facts of their stupidity to the Dept. of Insurance in your state.
Good luck!
Soo to my point, it wouldn't be too difficult to get a repair shop to claim a total loss on the bike instead of attempting to repair it. You should seriously investigate the total damage done to the bike, the cost to repair and where your going to get the parts from and those prices. HD doesn't exactly have discounted labor costs and there aren't that many bike repair places in any give town. I'd think it might be much easier to total the bike and go out and purchase another instead of attempting to repair a wrecked bike that will take weeks of work. It will never be the same again and very well may kill you if the work isn't done to factory specs.
For me the crash bar bent on my left side and tore the flange where it attaches to the upper frame; about 3/8". At first they told me it might be a total. I couldn't believe it. Now it is a new frame and frame up rebuild.
My bike is a 2009 still under warranty. How can they possibly say that a bike rebuilt from the ground up in the harley shop is equivalent to a factory built bike? $17000 to total or 9300 to change out the frame.
Anybody have any ideas about this?
