After doing my research and looking at all the options my brother and I decided to stay in Custer SD. We liked that location and it's a good central spot to go see the other sites in the area. Sturgis 2013 we are ready!!!
I went last year for my first time. I enjoyed all the riding around to sights. Got to use hotel points and stayed in Holiday Inn in spearfish for free. Great deal in fact stayed the whole way and back in hotels for free. Planning on going back for the 75th anniversary
Nights in the Sturgis area are generally very comfortable. It's a little higher in elevation, and the air is dry. I've seen it be 105 during the day and still nice enough to get a good nights sleep after the sun goes down. This year will be my 13th year, and I have yet to have a bad nights sleep, and we are usually in a tent.

lodging isn't cheap if you want a roof over your head.
remember - there is a reason so few people live there.
I remember waking up at the Chip one morning camping and at 8 a.m. the sun was blazing hot overhead and we were in our underwear with boots on sweating our butts taking down the tents. 8 a.m. not an inch of shade.
small micro bursts happen and if one falls on your tent you better have a good tent.
all from first hand experience.
But I love the place and ridden there 6 times for a total of 24,000 miles to, from and being there. 200 miles a day sightseeing is the norm.
If your thinking about doing it, just do it.
This will be my first time there. Were taking 3 weeks off. One week there, 2 weeks getting there and back home again. I'm going with a bunch of guys that go almost every year. I guess it will be the camp grounds in a tent. That is what they do every year. Can't wait to do the ride.
