Motorcycle noise is something that ABATE of PA has to take a position on. New Hope is not the only town complaining. The ABATE office gets dozens of calls inquiring what our position on noise is. Our answer has been "we have no position." This has been building for a couple years now and was a topic for discussion at last years Meeting of the Minds and earlier the AMA held a conference on noise. With the large increase in the popularity of motorcycling it's obvious this is not a problem that is just going to go away. We were stopped by a legislator at the capital yesterday who represents the West Moreland area. He has been getting calls from his district about loud bikes and what can he do about it. He was considering options such as increasing fines. We told him we are in the process of addressing the issue ourselves.
The bottom line is we either police ourselves or the legislature and local police departments will be forced to do it for us because of complaints. Believe it or not what is music to our ears is irritating to others. You can ride with straight pipes without attracting attention. It's the unecessary revving that multiplied with the increased number of bikes that seems to be the problem.
Our lobbyist is now drafting ABATE's position on motorcycle noise that will be ready for the grand board meeting coming up on March 20th. There is already a law that limits noise to 86 decibels and we have been getting away with breaking this law for many years. This is not something we could get a bill introduced for to increase it to 100 decibels.
I know that ABATE members make up a small percentage of all the riders out there. And most of those creating a problem for us are not members. But bring this to the attention of your chapters and see if we can't do our part to bring some relief to the situation.
