Default Please explain how engine is connected to oil pan, which is under transmission(?)

I am trying to figure out how oil system works. I thought transmission oil was connected to engine oil system, but they have different dipsticks and manual specifies different oil. Engine oil pan is under transmission.
thanks.

The trans drain is just a thru- hole on the oil pan that is sealed by the gasket. They are not connected. Third hole on the top from the left.

The FSM for your bike will give you a comprehensive description of the lubrication system. The casing which looks like the transmission is actually a double-decker, with the transmission gears and their oil in the top deck, completely cut off from the bottom deck. The bottom deck is your engine oil tank, with the oil pump circulating engine oil from and back to it.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!
How engine is connected to oil pan? There are 2 long holes in transmission case toward engine, is that it? I guess 2 oil pumps (scavenging and common) are inside engine case? It is one pump, but it has 2 circuits, scavanging and lubricating?
I didn't find description in my both manuals, I have 13 and 99-08.

Wink

If you have a genuine factory service manual there is a diagram in the Trans section which shows the trans casing and oil pan (I have to add that the most recent book I have is for a 2003). The fact you have a 99-08 book indicates that is an aftermarket one, not a genuine H-D FSM, although that is for the early twincam, not your later version.

The oil pan is bolted to the underside of the transmission casing, which is then bolted to the rear of the engine crankcase. The engine has a two stage oil pump, inside the cam casing, incorporating both supply and scavange. There are oilways drilled into both the crankcase and trans case, through which the oil is pumped.
