My 01 sportster was sitting for a couple weeks in the garage, was driving the truck with all the storms in the area. Went to take her out today, stood her up, checked the oil. Hmm seemed really low. Really low. Fed her two quarts, threw a little chalk on the dipstick and she measured perfect. Turn the gas on, go to start her up. Turns over. Nothing. Start, slight rev, finally kicks, and Boom! She backfires. Interesting. Start her up one more time, she runs, rev and... felt a pop and warmth on my leg. Oil cap popped off and oils overflowing. Spent the next 20 minutes sucking oil out of the tank, cleaning the bike and scrubbing the blacktop. Moral of the story, remember to warm em up to get a proper oil reading.
more important is these things wet sump!!!
sad thing is unlike the iron with the transfer valve, it is harder to remove the oil from the c/c back to the bag.
there is a plug you can remove but treat it like a baby as the repair isn't as nice.
run her every week to keep the oil in the bag. if you can see oil in the tank, start it and watch idiot lamp, it will pump the oil back to the bag.
