Default Billet vs Finned

I'm looking for opinions and or facts on which oil cooler performs better. The billet type or the finned type? Or is "placement" of the cooler more than the type?

I'm currently running the HD Premium oil cooler, (Finned) which is installed between the two down tubes of the frame on my 06 Softail. It was hot here yesterday, and I was riding two up and my oil temp was around 240ish in town,,climbed to 250 in stop & go freeway traffic....on the highway it was 220ish. Riding downhill and at the beach it was 210.

Now another Softail I was riding with (he's riding solo) had the Billet type oil cooler mounted to and following the angle of his down tubes. (see pic)
His oil temps were always 20 degrees cooler...
Seems to me it's more where, and how it's mounted. That with the spacers used for mounting the air would "rush" around the cooler, (somewhat like air rushes around an airplane wing) thus cooling the oil better.

So what do you experts think?
Thanks...

What kind of oil where you both running? Synthetic will normally run 20 degrees cooler. I run a cooler called Billett Cool. It mounts in between the filter mount and the filter. I still see temps of 260 on 100+ degree days. All the more reason to run synthetic.

The billit type isn't really a cooler, it's a heat sink. A stacked plate cooler will always be more efficient than a heat sink.

Just a thought here, but could there be a considerable difference between fuel managment on both bikes? Are you running lean, and your partner running rich?

Ya know that's a consideration I suppose. But I do have a PCIII and the bike has been dyno tuned, runs like a scalded dog! So I'm confussed....

Could also be variations in the accuracy of the two oil temp gauges.
H-D specs the '07's at a normal operating temp of 230 degrees, so I would think the '06's are close to that temp as well. If that's the case your temps aren't too far out of line...
