I have been told not to use RedLine Heavy Shock Proof in my Tranny yet because I only have 9400 miles on my 06 R/G...they(dealer) said that it is to heavy for a newer tranny and will cause leaks...is there any truth to this? I have been reading this forums for a while and doing my home work and was thinking of trying RedLine Shock Proof Heavy out in the tranny...will stick to Mobil V-Twin in the engine. Just wanted to hear from all of you about this...this Forum has be a great place for info. So if you are running Redline please let me know how you like it and what your milage is or was when you started using it
I think I am going to throw the bullshit flag on this one. I have been using Redline in my 07 RG and have over 12K and have never even had a glimmer of a problem. Stuff is great and contributed to quieting down the 5th gear noise so prevalent in these gearboxes.
That what I keep hearing, I just wanted to get some people running it to give me some feedback. I think the guy that told me this is just not a Redline fan. Thanks for the input....
LOL, what do they want you to do? Wait untill it starts making noise?
I have an 06 RG with over 15K. Been using Redline HD Shockproof since the 1000 mile service when I promptly dumped the SynIII they put in without asking first.
Absolutely no problems, shifts smoothly and came out clean (and still really thick and red, LOL) when I changed it at ten K.
I have used it for several years and many miles and it has NEVER caused any problem and has always performed perfectly, as far as I can tell. IF it ever does leak, I will be able to tell what it is instead of guess with an oil or oil like fluid.
He must wanna sell you just one more quart of secret sauce, IMHO.
I furnished a bottle of Redline Shockproof Heavy when I had the 1000 mile service done at the dealer last year and have been running it for the last 4000 miles since then with no problems.
A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness greater than an SAE 250 grade, with the same low fluid friction as with our 80W140. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. Offers a "best of both worlds" balance of relatively low drag and the utmost in protection.
I just did the 5K service on my 03 Se-Deuce, and used Red Line in all three holes.....with Heavy Shockproof in the tranny. I guess I have put a few hundred miles on her since, so I cant speak on MPG, but it sure seems to shift & find neutral a bit more easy.....Oh, and there are no leaks. That causing a leak story dont sound like the truth anyway......if your tranny is going to leak its going to leak no matter what brand of oil/gear lube you use.....IMHO.
FWIW,
I changed to Redline 20/50 in the engine, MTL in the primary and Heavy Shockproof in my 93 Evoabout a month ago. This engine has 19K on it and has seen nothing but dino oil since it was built.I have noticed that the transmission shifts much smoother. A couple of small oil leaks have developed one from the bottom clutch cable o-ring and the other from where the midshift controls were sealed off on the inner primary. At this point I can't say that these were cause by the switch over. At least I feel comfortable now that the engine and transmission are better protected from the high heat down here.

Of all the aftermarket oils on the market I'd say that Shockproof is one of the most often used gear oils in Harleys, and I've never seen a single case where it caused a leak. I've seen a few bikes develop leaks, but it was due to bad seals and not because of what oil was in the gearbox which, incidentally, was different brands.
I'd bet the dealer has some other brand on the shelf he wants to sell you- Amsoil, Belray, Formula+, etc...
Remember, very minor leaks become obvious with Redline because of the color of the stuff. The same leak might be unnoticed using synthetic oil or another oil colored lube. Leak detection and identification as transmission leak is an ADVANTAGE of using Redline, not the cause of the leak.
