Default RE: Who does 2500 mile oil change???

Depends. If most of my rides are short, around town, ones, then I change oil and filter before 5,000 miles, usually 2,500 to 3,000 miles. (Since I ride a Softail, I also scavenge with each oil change, and that will raise another bit of discussion) On the other hand, if I have a longer trip planned, then I let the oil be, and then I change it and the filter at 5,000 miles. I beleive the best answer to your question is based on how you ride your bike, short trip are more wearing than long ones. And .. hot weather is **** marmful to oil than cooler weather. Just do what you feel comfortable with.

I change mine at 5000 miles or one year which ever comes first.
No I not being a smart a$$ its just that this has been my riding
habit the last 4 years, Hoping to change soon and bump it up to
12k a year.
Thanks,

ORIGINAL: linck241

Hi all,
I was wondering how many people doa 2500 mile oil change?
I hear of so many people doing it but in the owners manual of my 07 street glide it says to change the oil at 1000 miles and than 5000 miles.
My question is where did the 2500 one come in and if it is necessary why does'nt the manual say?

Thanks
I've been trying to figure this one out too. I called H-D Customer Service and was told by a seemingly knowledgeable guy that the 2500 mile service is the old recommendation and that it is no longer recommended on the newer twin cam models made in the last 2 or 3 years. FWIW.

People just amaze me sometimes. Recommended does not mean absolute. If you never get the oil temp above 175 you are pumping moisture through the engine. Change it more frequently. If you change from a stock air filter to one that flows more air, and more dirt ,(they don't filteras well)oil needs more frequent changing. Operational circumatances dictate intervals, not the owners manual. Alot depends where youlive and the air quality also.By the way, the oil filter will not remove the extra dirt a free flowing air filter will let in. In the long run, oil is cheap.

I've been changing my Mobil 1 Vtwin at 2500 miles, filter at 5,000 but I'm switching to 3,000 miles on the oil and filter at 6,000. I do a mix of city commuting and trips on mine but decided the oil was still looking pretty good at 2500. I usually put about 20,000 miles a year on my Harley with another 15,000 on my Suzuki 1200 Bandit so Ibuy a lot of oil.

I've been scanning through these threads on oil for several days. Earlier I ran across a link to a white-paper regarding oil that was very detailed and indebth on "all things oil". One thing some of you that change oil at very short intervals may not be realizing is that you could actually be doing your engine more harm than good. Especially with synthetic oils, the lubricating properties actually get better once you get 2-3k miles on it, by dumping the oil just when its "getting good" you are unknowingly causing more wear than you would if you ran it 6k or even more. Time is a factor, but again with synthetic oil 3 months is way short unless you are doing a lot of really short trips and not getting the engine warmed up. As others have said, change the filter at 3k miles, then just top off the oil.

Its kind of like my step-daughter insisting that she is "being nice" to her 2000 Chevy Cavalier by running premium gas in it. If an engine doesn't need high octane you are doing more harm than good using it. Same goes for oil, just because changing it frequently makes you "feel good" doesn't mean you are really doing your bike a favor.

Just my nickel's worth.

Since I ride every day I have to do more oil changes throughout the year.I use Amsoil synthetics and change my oil out around 5,000 - 6,000 miles. I've found their 20-50w works well for the oil, tranny and primary both for summer and winter riding. I've never hadany engine problems, knock on wood, and I too have read where it's not good for the engine to be changing every 2,500 miles.

Excuse me while I bust a gut in laughter. Oil gets better with miles on it?

Let me bust another gut !A "free flowing" air filter lets in more dirt?

A free flowing filter removes the EPA restrictive, noise suppressinginlet--it doesn't let in more dirt!.Many are larger in size, but have a tighter weave. In many cases, the filtering is actually better!

Ever hear of K&N?
