Need some advice. My '02 Ultra all of a sudden is reading little to no pressure on the oil gauge. It has about 30k miles on the engine. It was fine the other day, then yesterday morning it was low (0 at idle and then up to only 20 lbs at 3,000rpm). Now the gauge doesn't move at all. The engine sounds fine, the oil looks fine. How can I check the sensor to see if that is the problem. Also, has anyone had problems with the oil pumps on these bikes??
After adding a fairing mtd. oiltemperature gauge, my bike (after 5K miles) started with a zero pressure reading AND red warning light at start up. No top end noise so, when I rode off, the pressure returned and stayed untill the bike was shut off and restarted then, same thing again.
Turned out the return oil hose (between the trans and engine) was sucking air because the clamp had loosened up. This is common according to the dealer who found out about it from HD service rep.
You have an ultra, does the oil light AND gauge register no pressure OR just the gauge?
It is just the gauge, the engine light is NOT coming on. Also, there is NO top end noise so I am pretty confident it is not really a pressure problem. I am just being super cautious. I just bought a new '07 Ultra last spring, so my old Ultra is now my son's ride. I am trying to keep it in good shape so I can get him to ride with me and my friends next year for the annual trek to Sturgis.
Great tip on the hose. I will check that this evening. Where exactly is it located?
As you face the bike from the right, just behind the engine you will see a cover between the motor and transmission. There are two black oil hoses under this cover. The top one is the return hose. A leak here (air leak, no oil came out of mine) will cause a no pressure reading.
