Default RE: Engine Oil

I ran Syn3 in all three holes of my previous bike (Heritage) until I found out it was manufactured by Citgo. I feel sorry for the station operators since all are American, but I don't want to contribute a penney to chavez. When I bought my Ultra, I switched to Royal purple (a friend is a distributor)in all holes and have run it that way for 2 years, although not entirely comfortable with 20W50 in the transmission. Recently, after reading all the posts regarding gear oil, I think it finally sunk in; motor, motor oil; gear box, gear oil (duh). I wanted to try Redline Shockproofbut it's not available locally and the freight is almost as much as the product. I finally changed to 85W140 Bel-Ray, recommended by an old HD wrench at Myers-Duren HD in Tulsa. I think most HD dealers carry it. Anyway, I now feel better and my rattlin', hollerin' transmission is now pretty quiet.

ORIGINAL: Tmoney

harley oil is made by shell its not that great i have done some checking around and ams oil is the best to run in a motorcycle they have a chart and it showed ams oil leading all other competitors
it also showed how storage of a bike over a period of time leads to some corrosion internally with other brands amsoil showed none

Harley oil is made by Citgo and Amsoil tests are backed by Amsoil and paid for by Amsoil so would you expect them to say anything different?

You really should do some research before posting on the net.

If you believe everything that you hear about Amsoil, then enjoy the hype.

Amsoil, Mobil1, Syn3, Redline are ALL good oils. Go with the least expensive but use gear oil in the trans. JMHO...

Think twice about what you are using in your tranny if you are going to be out riding in near 0 weather. I have to switch mine out for winter, and then change it again once it warms up. Don

I went with mobile 1 vtwin in the engine and primary and mobile one 75w90 syn gear lube in tranny at 1000 mile service based on info read on this forum. The very first ride I noticed an appreciable differance in power and very smooth shifting (click instead of clunk). It still clunks into first on a cold start up but from what I understand there is no cure for that.I am sure other oils mentioned in this forum are all fine products,my decision was based on personal research and product availability.I have about 2500 miles on it now and no regrets.

LOL, mke, go to Redline HD Shockproof in your tranny and the clunk will be gone, even cold in first!

Spectro probably has some of the best. Their tranny oil seems to be the best for the new bikes.

The GL 5 is for the new six speeds.
