I'm planing on using Redline in my next oil change. Their web sit says "Not recommended for street use in production engines that see sustained oil temperatures below 225°F. Those engines should use Red Line 10W-30 or 10W-40." My question is what tempertures do most Twin 88 run at?
FWIW, the digital dipstick (2nd generation) on my FXDWG has shown as much as 250* sump oil temp two up in the summer in Texas. Most of the time it hovers a couple of degrees +- 218*. Unless it's raining and then the engine is hard pressed to hit 160*. I do have an oil cooler on this bike too. Since I installed the cooler the max i have seen is 232*. I run Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50.
The Redline tech told me to use 20w50 in the TC88 crankcase or 20w60 in really hot climates. MTL in the primary and Shockproof heavy in the trans. If you haven't got at least 1000 miles on the engine don't put the Redline in it until you do.
I've got the temp gauge in my oil sump and the highest I've gotten so far is about 210. We haven't had any real hot weather yet, so I don't know how high it might go.

If you use any synthetic 20w50 you will run cooler. Try Mobil1Vtwin 20w50. You can get it at autozone. Once you are completely broken in try the redline oils at www.redlineoil.com
Normal operating temp is 230 right? I might just spring for the premium oil cooler for the summertime here in Florida. I notice that my TC runs a bit hotter then my old Shovel or EVO's did.

I'm worried about getting a stone hit leak on the cooler and pumping out all my oil on a long ride and frying the motor.......but that's just me. I worry about a lot of other stupid $hit too.
I am running Syn3 now, but am probably going to redline at my 5K. I am a believer in synthetics. Any of them are better than dino oil. IMO

Never had any heat issues at speed. But get stuck in traffic and now your talking HOT! No air = no cooling. Best thing then is synthetic. ANY synthetic. I didn't believe in it cause I changed it every 2-3 thousand miles in my 97 evo, but after getting stuck in traffic with the 88 and seeing my oil temp peg the gauge, well I knew what woulda happened to dino oil. I'm still thinking about getting a cooler.
