They came out with the Syn3 in all 3 holes in 2005...then about 2007 lots of dealers stopped using it in the trans. No doubt it will work but motor oil won't stay in grade as long as gear oil and since it is the same price why do it? I used it in the trans of my 05 Sportster and switched to gear oil because it was too noisy with the syn3. My LR came with formula + from the factory.
I run Mobil1 in my Ninja and I run that bike pretty dang hard with no problems. Every sportbike I've owned ran motor oil in the transmission, I can't see where my HD can't.

It can. But there are better options out there for the same $$. All bikes with a shared sump (Vrod's included) run the motor oil in the trans. But all have an oil change interval of 3-5000 miles because of the shearing of the oil in the trans. Gear oils are very shear resistant so if you have a seperate transmission sump you can run a synthetic gear oil 20,000 miles with no issue. With Redline Shockproof Heavy 75w250 the tech support people at Redline say it will go 30,000 miles. It is about $10/quart for 20-30,000 miles of use. Do the math.
Guess I'm a creature of habit, but I don't believe in these high mileage extended oil change routines...
Not saying it's necessary (especially with today's super-duper oils), but I change the oil and filters in my Harley's, cars, and trucks at 3,000 miles maximum, no matter if I am running conventional or synthetic fluids.
Doesn't cost that much (especially in the bikes), and I don't consider it a waste of money as it gives me a good feeling to run fresh fluid in my vehicles.
Like I said, it's probably overkill to change fluids as frequently as I do, but I don't care..
I hate changing oil. it's a real waste of time.I usually ride 10k or more miles per year, so if I can use an oil that has a uoa to back up its ability to go longer then 3k miles I'm all over it.So two changes per year instead of three saves time getting oily, trips to the place to dump the old stuff plus your getting more value for you money. Ride more, change oil less.,,,,
Those Detroit Diesels...do they get up to 300*F operating temperature like a TC96 will in the Summer? HDEO's will work but I like a 50w oil in the heat.
I put mobil 1 15-50 in engine.does your clutch and gears get up to 300 degrees?hses engines on these are emd the same ones that is used in trains
