I second this product.........it is the least messy and does the trick...newer o-ring chains don't need all of the care as of the prior non-o-ring styles.......lube now is mostly to keep the outer part of the chain nice not the roller bearing parts....use this products on our ZZR1200 and it works fine is not a mess to maintain.....JMO,,,,,

There are special lubes made for chains.Motor oil will work in a pinch,but chain lube is the way to go.
Belray,PJ1 are good brands.They make lube for std, and O-ring chain.
Its a good idea to lift the bike so you can apply the lube while rotating the tire.

My first bike had a chain, and the best time to clean and oil it is after a ride when the chain is warm. Just wipe down with a cloth well soaked in Simple Green or kerosene, then wipe dry. Spray BelRay SuperClean chain lube on it and you should be good for 500 to 1000 miles. When (and if) you need a new chain, get an o-ring one. They last much longer.
