Question Synthetic??

My Road King has about 70K miles on it. I bought it new, and have done every oil change with HD MoCo Dyno oil. At first I changed at 150, 500, 1000, 2500, and ever since I never have gone over 2500 miles between changes. With that said, I read a few threads over in touring that said 5W50W Mobil 1 was good, and that a lot of folks are using it. I can buy it in 5 gallon container at WalMart for $26, and that's less than HD Dyno Oil. I'm thinking about switching over to Synthetic. Anyone got any reasons not to? I haven't had any kind of oil leaks or problems with the current MoCo Dyno oil, and some folks tell me I have to worry about leaks with the synthetic. Why? Please PM me if more convenient.

Big Sky. I don't think that that is a 5 gallon container for $26. Maybe 5quarts. Anyway, if it is 5W/50 I'd stay away from it. If it is 15W/50 then its ok to use.

1. it should be min 20W/50W
2. it should be at least mobil 1 v-twin 20/50 (I had used this thought it was good)
3. if not then amsoil 20/50 ( I use this one now it is great)
4. If your going to stick to the 2500 mi change then harley's dino or syn3 will
be just fine.
5. Also if you think trying to save $25 every 2500 miles is worth it, then just
keep doing what you are doing seems to be working for you.

You can't go wrong with synthetic...Pick your brand and stick with it. I've been using Red-Line for 4-yrs and have no regrets. The synthetics are so close in quality that no one brand has a monopoly. Make your choice and stay with that brand.

With that good of maintenance, you should see no problems.

Hey Kromdom, yes it is listed more than once. I wanted the broadest exposure possible to this question. Some folks follow a specific area of topics, and don't venture into the others. I wanted to make sure I had a good number of folks advise before I dump the dino, and go to synthetic...

Okay, so what is the deal now with syn oil? After reading all of the posts on the forum I had my 09 SG bathed in syn . . . like my cages I always change the oil faithfully since it is cheaper than replacing rings and valves. I was not aware of oil leaks with the syn. Are there any true specs on this or just word of mouth?

Syns do not cause leaks...they expose flaws that are already there by cleaning a possible sluge filled plug. The only reason this should happen is if high mileage with poor maintainence.
