I noticed that the drain plugs on the transmission and the oil plugs seem to have a compound on them. I claenaed them when I changed but should I have something on the threads? I put a new o ring on but it seems like I had to take the transmission plug to the top of the torque range to stop it from leaking a little.
Its a liquid teflon, some call it pipe dope. It helps seal the threads. It cant hurt to use it in conjunction with the "O" ring. Dont glob it on too thick, just enough to fill the threads on the plug..........................BG
I think it's white loctite from the factory. You don't need it. I have re-used my o-rings 2 times already as long as you torque the plugs bac in to spec all is fine.
The thread sealer pipe dope works best for me easier to use they the teflon tape.I`m always having it unwrap on me, The pipe dope , I know it works great on sealing the primary plug. Just a little bab will do it .
I use a couple of wraps with the teflon tape, been doin OK so far.
There is one basic problems with using teflon tape. The tape gets cut by the threads when reinstalling the drain plug and you can end up with small pieces of tape inside your engine. Since the tape does not dissolve it remains in your engine looking for a place to plug something up. I have seen this happen on hydraulic fittings where the tape ends up clogging an orfice and completely disabeling the function. For those who use the teflon tape, the next time you remove your drain plug look closely at the female threads in the drain hole and you will find pieces of teflon tape that didnt come out with the plug. When the plug is put back in, these little pieces of tape are now pushed ahead of the plug into your engine. This wont happen with the liquid teflon.............BG
