hey guys. I'm a newbie and trailored my bike for the first time from New Orleans, LA to Wears Valley, TN. Afterword when I started my bike up I heard a distinct clanging from inside the engine. After warming up awhile it went away. It did it after the trip home as well. I'm assuming this was due to all the bouncing and what not when being trailored that caused the engine oil to settle at the bottom and the engine was running for a bit with no oil.
My question is: Is this what happened? If yes, what can I do to prevent it. If no, then what caused it?
Thanks
This is a new one on me. Your oil could be "sumping" into the engine from the oil tank. If that is the case one way to tell is to check the oil level in the tank before you start it after the long trailer ride. If in fact it is low and the oil is leaking past the check valve you might want to replace the check valve ball and spring and clean the housing and see if it seals better and prevents that from happening.
If that still occurs after the new ball & spring then disconnnect the spark plug wires and rotate the engine on the starter for a minute to pre oil the engine before you actually start it. What you are probably hearing is the valvetrain clanking away because the oil has drained out of the engine top end.
BTW, what bike? Year? and what oil are you running?
You didn't say what year. An EVO has a ball and spring check valve, but a twin cam doesn't. I had a similar incident with a twin cam when trailered. The bouncing in the trailer causes the lifters to bleed down and they will be a little noisy until they pump up again.
