Question....Do you guys change your oil early(like 500 miles) on your first oil change? I know I have done it early on all my trucks, and do you switch to synthetic immediatly or wait for the motor to break-in alittle while? I did a search for first oil change and nothing came up(just incase this has been asked a million times). Thanks!
The owners manual says to do it at 1k miles. Lots of guys do it sooner like at 250 and then at 500 miles. Overkill? maybe . Will it hurt anything? not likely. Does it cost more? a little. If it makes you feel better, do it when you want. Some feel you can run synthetic at the first change, but Harley sells bikes that come with the factory fill of their synthetic. If you change at 1k miles you'll be ok thousands of people have done it with good results. My feeling is if your using a good synthetic oil, there's no reason to change it sooner then 5k miles like the book calls for.,,
Thanks "big cahuna". Knowing it already has synthetic in it tells me I can switch brands any time, hadn't quite gotten to that section in the owners manuel yet. Thanks for the info, Chuck

I changed the engine oil on my 2010 at 100, 400 and 1100 miles.
For the 08 I changed engine oil at 450 and 1600 miles.
I plan to go with synthetic at 2500 miles. Then get a UOA at 5000 miles.
There"s no magic to changing oil. Ride bike get it hot, remove drain plug and let old oil drain into pan, reinstall plug. Unscrew old filter, screw on new filter. Add correct amout of oil, check level after short run, Your finished. If you have everything you'll need oil and filter, maybe 1/2 hour.
....and do you guys do the changes yourself? I haven't even checked yet on how much they cost at the dealer, ideas?
Normally, the oil is changed at the scheduled service intervals which also includes other adjustments/inspections.
You are looking at $200-400 depending on model and mileage.
A straight up oil change will be alot less but still expensive from a dealer IMO.
Changing the oil yourself is easy.I would recommend a HD service manual.
