I always break my bikes in on Syn3. It is actually a great oil for breakin because it is a GroupIII synthetic. Gives you just enough coefficient of friction for a nice break in with some level of temperature protection against oxidation.
I change at 100, 500 and 1000 miles. The filter gets changed at 100 and 1000. Once I hit 3000 miles the Syn3 gets dumped and then it gets Mobil1 vtwin or redline.
If you Google (HD's syn3 oil-a real synthetic or not?) you will find that that Citgo Petroleum makes syn3 for harley and it is a blended oil.
Syn3 is a group III hydro finished oil. It has about the same additive package as the HD 360 but with a hydrocracked mineral base oil. It is not a blended oil but not a PAO or POE based oil. There are lots of Group III automotive oils in the market. Pennzoil Platinum is one example. Syn3 is a good oil it is just that there are better oils for the same price out there. You can get Mobil1 vtwin or Amsoil which are GroupIV PAO based oils or Redline which is a GroupV POE based oil for about the same money. So, syn3 should really sell for about $6 a quart to be competitive.
