Default New SYN3?

Is SYN3 now "New"? , am I right that it used to be a semi synthetic blend, is it now a full synthetic?

I was under the impression the SYN3 was a synthetic oil.

Syn3 was never a synthetic blend. It is a GroupIII synthetic oil. It is made from highly refined mineral base stock oils. Oils like Pennzoil Platinum and Valvoline Synpower are GroupIII. Mobil1Vtwin and Amsoil are GroupIV PAO based synthetic oils. Redline oils are GroupV POE based synthetics.

There's been a lot of confussion on the syn3 oils..
the silver bottle is a blended and states on it that its a SYN blend oil..
the gold bottle just say Syn MC oil... and called syn3

I think it has a "NEW!" tag because it's now available in gallon jugs. I don't remember it being sold by the gallon before, but I don't use it so I'm not exactly sure.

+1 I did notice a synthetic "blend" oil at the dealer last week. Most blends are 33% synthetic and 67% dino. What is the point of having a blend?

Syn3 is definitely a blend of dino oil base stock that is called a synthetic but in essence is isn't a true synthetic but a blended oil. Many other full synthetics are a better choice.

Terminology is everything, and unless everyone involved is using the same definitions for the common terminology, confusion reigns.

A blend is defined as a mixture of synthetic oil and mineral-based oil. That would mean a mixture of a Group III, Group IV, or Group V synthetic base stock with a Group II mineral-based base stock. Also, a blend is a mixture of mineral-based oil and synthetic oil in a ratio that contains no more than 30% synthetic.

Syn3 synthetic is a 100% Group III base stock, not mixed with a Group II base stock; therefore, it is not a blend.

While I might agree that a Group III isn't a "true" synthetic, since it is "hydrocracked" mineral-based oil, the end result of the hydrocracking procedure is an oil with basically the same characteristics as the "true" synthetic oils; that is, all the molecules are identical long-chain polymers.

Now to completely confuse the issue - the U.S. is probably the only place Group III oil is "officially" a synthetic. Elsewhere, Group III oils are generally known as semi-synthetic oil, but are still not blends.
