just purchased a 07 dyna, was thinking about putting in the syn 3 in the engine and harley formula plus in the primary and trans. The dealer only has HD products. I thought the syn3 was good oil? I read a lot of threads and all I have been reading is negative things about the syn 3 oil. I know Mobil 1 is good stuff, but I'm going to have my bike serviced through the dealer. I ave used syn 3 in my sportster in the past with good results. I was told that its not a good idea to use the syn 3 in the trans and primary thuogh.
Hey Dlongo8241
All I can tell ya is this. I "had" the syn3 in my ride, all 3 holes, for about 250 miles. Sounded like a can full of marbles and shifted like crap. My '02 would be to follow the advise found here, get a "good" synthetic and a "good" gear oil and have fun. My dealer advises NOT to use syn3 in the tranny or primary. I run HD Formula+ in my primary and Redline in my tranny....very happy here.
Good luck!
Syn3 isn't a bad oil. There's nothing wrong with it, and it will work just fine if you follow the service recommendtions in the owners manual.
However, Syn3 is a blend, not a true synthetic; so probably not much better than regular Penzoil. And it's nearly $10 a qt. Castrol blend is only about $3.50 a qt, Penzoil's less than $2 a qt.
As for the Formula+, I'm going to stick with that until something truly better comes along. The new transmission is not like the old 5 speeds, so the old way of thinking just doesn't cut it.
Anyway, run what makes you happy. Im not a wrench, or a chemist. But, I can say that when I changed away from syn3, I saw a drop in the operating temp on my bike and I have better shifting in the tranny. As for the primary, well, in mine the HD Formula+ seems to woek fine.
Goodluck either way you go. Do some reading here, talk to your friends and wrench, then run what makes you comfortable. Hell, I changed my mind twice before I was finally settled in,lol.
