i have a 86 fxrs 1340 evo. it have around 48k miles on it. run grate did not use a drop of oil. used harley 20/50. changed it over to amsoil oil. had it done S&J cycles. they done my bike work for around ten years. and after the change in two weeks i went through five quarts of oil.not coming out the exhaust and not leaking out on the floor. they didn't have a clue where it was going. went back to harley 20/50. it went to 1 quart every 2500 miles. don't make any cents. i email amsoil they said it was just a old bike and had a lot of were. funny it went from to not using any oil, to using a lot of oil and back to using a little oil. i had them do a top end not long ago. they it was still in good shape . but it don't use any oil now. just don't add up right some how. thanks got any ideals let me know. but it turned me away from amsoil . till i make some cents out of it. and they where not any help.
I would never use any synthetic oil in a bike built before 1995. Engine sealing technology changed dramatically in the 1993-95 time frame so syn oil is fine after that. Before 1995 it is a crap shoot. Your engine had to be burning it like crazy.
Some not all older engines had seals and gaskets made from materials that did not work well with SYn products.
The same is true about early and pre 70's fuel systems and 10% blended fuels.. I use SYN Gear lube in the trans on my 1995 EVO and have had no issue with it bike has well over 50K on it. Engine has 20/50 Syn in it no issues yet. About half it's life was on plain old HD engine oil. That does not mean that it will work out the same for everyone.
While not a fan of amsoil I think the results would be the same regardless of brand.
Many rider really do not put a lot of miles on their bikes, for them it don't madder one bit what they use.
Those of us that rack up a lot of miles SYn may provide a bit more protection from heat and add some life to the ride.
Coin toss your cash your ride you decide what is best.
i'm not trying to put down amsoil. i also have a 05 flht amsoil is in the engine, and trans. 20k no problems yet. it's just odd how it went through my evo. had bike many years. know every nut and bolt on it. but thanks for your reply. werewolf
Modern engines run with much smaller clearances than our Evos had. It is partly through improved manufacturing methods, but also done to reduce 'parasitic losses'. I went to an engineering lecture where these were discussed and it was quite an eye-opener!
To make modern engines more economical, also less polluting, the engineers do a wide range of clever things. Harley are not alone in exploiting modern technology with the twincams and synthetic oils are part of the solution. Amsoil specialise in modern synthetic oils which are great for your 05.
