Default oil temp

I tried to search this but I couldnt find anything. hell I probably did it wrong!!!

I am replacing my air temp. gauge in my fairing with an oil temp. gauge, is there a guideline to go by as far as what the engine oil temp. should be?

Just wondering what the high end limit is... is there a point that I should be shutting the bike off and letting it cool off, or if the oil gets that hot its too late anyway? Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm guessing that somewhere around 275 to 290 is normal operating temps, right or wrong? Thanks in advance

That may be normal for temps on a v twin but optimal temps for oil are in the 210-230 range.

Last July on a cross country trip I checked the oil temp at each gas stop along the way (one way only, approx 2,500 miles). I don't have an oil temp gauge but I checked the oil pan temperature with an infrared gun.

The highest temp I saw was 266 degrees at an ambient air temp around 105 degrees.

The lowest was 229 degrees at an ambient air temp of approx 75 degrees.

Most of my readings were in the 240-250 neighborhood at ambient air temps in the 90s.

The bike is a 2011 Ultra Limited 103 with the factory oil cooler and the running speeds were typically 10 over the limit (75-90 MPH depending on location).

What is normal and what is best are not always the same. On my 103 the dealer said up to 300 is normal. After 10k miles in that area they had to replace cylinders, pistons, rings and heads under warranty.

Now I have made the needed mods to keep oil temps down around 230 on the hottest days.

I just did a 20K service and had my Indy swap my air for an oil temp guage. Now I did this in late november and put her away for the year but in the 15 miles home down the interstate doing 70-75mph. Outside Air Temp was in the 40's and I never saw above 170,,,I run all Amsoil
