The eternal question...
It was unbelievable how many responses were on the transmission lube thread. People using mobil 1 75/140, amsoil, belray, spectro, HD stuff, redline, revtech and to my surprise - one person chimed in stating they use the same gear lube as they put in their tractor from the farm supply store and it cost $2 a quart! I stopped reading after 150 pages and even reviewed the poll. Yet, when it came time to obligate while standing in the auto parts store isle with all the choices looming at me, I balked. Didn't even make a purchase.
When it came time to drain and fill all 3 holes, I elected to try amsoil 20/50 synthetic for all 3. Why not? It clearly states in print "high performance engine, transmission & primary chaincase lubricant". Well, the tranny did not like it and showed it by making neutral hard to find and 3,4, and 5 gears clunky at shift engagement. It was fine before draining the pale red thick stuff the previous owner used...
So, I made a effort to correct it. Took the morning and drove 30 miles to get a quart of redline shock proof heavy. Take it to the counter and in casual conversation the clerk asks what I'm putting it in. Told him a '06 dyna 6 speed. He looked at me like "what?!" and says, "that stuff is for automobile rear end differentials. You almost have to use a grease gun to put it in". He brings me some V-twin shock proof tranny lube. "This is what you're after", he said. Once again, confusion set in. Was all that research for nothing? Did I not read the posts correctly? He assured me the V-twin was correct for the application.
Does everyone go through trial and error finding what works best for their machines or is it all a mental hype of feeling "warm and fuzzy" while paying too much for a product that uses advertising and wording to get the sale? Did I get the right stuff?
There you have it. The eternal question....
