Default Red Line MTL question ?

Hi all ! I bought a couple of qts of the RL MTL for my primary (bought an extra qt for next change) and i was wondering if it came in dif weights ? The qts i have say on the side of the label that its API GL-4 Gear Oil / SAE 70 W 80, and was wondering if this is what everyone else that uses the RL MTL was using (same weight ?) ??? I also picked up 2 qts of the Red Line Shockproof Heavy for the tranny and bought 5 qts of M1 V-Twin 20 w 50 for the crank, but may return it to Autozone and go with the Amsoil.....just not sure yet ???

In my 2006 FLHTCU i run Mobil 1 20w50 in engine, Mobil 1 ATF in primary, and Redline HD Shockproof in tranny. No problems. IMO MTL would be OK for tranny but not sure I would use it in primary.

As far as I know, MTL is MTL. Never paid attention. I buy it, put it in, and don't worry about it. I run Redline in all three holes.

The MTL is correct for the primary. Gear oils are rated with higher numbers than motor oils and it is equivalent to about a 30 wt. motor oil.

Many, many Harley folks have been using MTL in the primary for years because of its good friction qualities for your clutch, being a Manual Transmission Fluid.

The rough equivalents are (Engine oil on left, gear oil on right)

SAE Engine Oil = SAE Gear Oil

10w thru mid range of 20w = 75w

Mid 20w thru mid 30w = 80w

Mid 30w thru low 40w = 85w

Low 40w thru 50w = 90w

60w up = 140w

MTL or anything costing more than $3/qt. is overkill for the primary, IMO, and most any fossil engine oil or ATF-F will work fine. I can't imagine what you'd gain by using $10/qt. gear oil in an area that doesn't need the additives present in that fluid. The M1 20w50 is a top-drawer product, but the 15w50 is much cheaper and just as good. Amsoil is also fine, but it is more expensive and for most people much harder to find. For engine oil, select from the popular choices (M1, Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc.) based on accessibility and price. Unless you can buy a brand at wholesale like I do, 15w50 M1 is the best choice for most people using those criteria. It's available at Walmart and most any auto-parts store for about $5/qt. Don't lose sleep over your choice, as any of the above, and some I didn't mention, will protect your engine far longer than you'll likely keep it.

Any 75w90 or heavier synthetic gear oil is best for the tranny, although going to a 85w140 in 6-speeds will likely quieten the whine and clatter somewhat. It did for mine. A good ??w50 synthetic engine oil is probably okay, too, but I prefer to think a gearbox should take gear oil.

I bought an 05' Fatboy last year from a private owner and i took it in to the stealer for its 5,000 service just to have it documented in the owners manual because the bike has a transferrable extended warranty till September 08' and i fell for the ol' "syn 3 in all 3 holes is the way to go" sales pitch and now with about 1800 miles on the syn3 garbage its time to purge the poison so to speak. Anywho, a co-worker of mine sell the Amsoil on the side and i just thought i'd go with the Amsoil is all. I'm doing the 20w50 in the crank & primary & 75w90 severe gear in the tranny.I'm not saying that the M1 VT is bad or anything, but a few guys i've talked to that bought the Amsoil off the same guy had nothing but good things to say about it and with my job and 3rd shift (60+ hours a week) it only leaves me about a half weekend (sleep half the saturdays away) weather permitting and last season got about 1800 miles in and more then likely would only average maybe 2,000 a season. So for 7-8 dollars more i'll just give up a pack or 2 of smokes i guess.Take care and ride safe !

Agree with what iclick said, just wanted to clarify that IF you are using Redline, MTL is the correct one for the primary rather than using the trans or engine oil. A plain thirty weight dino will do just fine too.

IF using expensive lubes causes you to give up two packs of cigarettes, you should buy the stuff in bulk and give up several cartons. That is a benefit I hadn't even thought of!

I run the MTL in the primary for 3 reasons:

1. It has NO moly to coat the clutch plates
2. It is a top shelf GroupV synthetic gear oil (only4 bucks more)with a pour point of 5w30 motor oil so it doesn't cause the clutch todrag when the bike is cold
3. I can goall yearon 1 fill and not worry about exceeding it's limits because YES it's overkill and I like overkill and don't wish to have to worry about the lube in my primary since it's a pain in the butt to check it. Easy to check the engine & trans but when I close up my primary...I'll pay $4 to forget about it........but that's just MHO

Oh yeah almost forgot.......there is only one weight for MTL and YES it's fine for the primary.
