Southern Cal
Planning a trip come July, part of it will be coming down the Pacific coast out of Oregon and into California. Going south as far a San Francisco and then want to head southeast. Looking on some maps I see Rt 99 and 395. 395 looks like it would be a nice ride instead of the super slab, just wondering about the heat in July in that area. Want to end up on 58, then 15 up to Henderson. Any suggestions on riding this area would be appreciated.
consider taking 1 and then stay on the coast to la or sd
395 is a nice ride but kinda desolate and will be hot maybe some wind..
I agree with grumpy, 395 is a nice ride, but the gas stations are few and far between. The high desert is HOT and the wind can be awful, so sunscreen and alot water should be in your saddlebags.
The route we took was (decent gas price in Four Corners) 58 to Bakersfield, 99 (divided 4 lane) (some bugs and farms) to Lodi (spent the night), 12 to Fairfield then to Petaluma (very nice wine country ride), Bodego Hwy to US 1, up the coast to Pt Arena. Route 1 on the coast is very twisty, but resturants/gas along the way. ... Coast Hwy (1) is beautiful and not as twisty in SoCal.
If you're running through Barstow, get gas there (Wally World is usually cheaper than stations on Main St). Avoid getting gas in Baker, they usually charge $1.00 + per gal more, because it's so far removed from the rest of the world! If you gas up in Barstow, you should be able to make it to State Line for your next fill up. The same goes for food. Also be careful of tumbleweeds, coyotees crossing the road and wind!
Be careful riding thru S.F / LA.
Let me know if I can be any more help.
