Laughlin River Run Official Countdown Thread
If you're taking Rt 66 from Barstow I'd suggest taking the freeway between Newbury Springs and Ludlow. It's not that far and that section of 66 will rattle your teeth out. Other than that it's a great ride. That's really the only section except for a few miles on I40 right out of Barstow.
Can't wait, I'm leaving on the 18th. 6 nights of camping on the way.

That is on surface roads, but parts are not the old Route 66. All of those turns on Sierra, Kenwood and up on Hwy 138 and 18 are just surface streets that get you out of the area. I know because I have been driving these from the 60's.
Route 66 ran out Foothill in from Irwindale all the way to San Bernardino (Streets changed names and have been covered by part of I-210, but ran pretty much straight through). It turned on "E" St north. It has been cut off to get back on Devore Rd. It ends at the I-15/I-215 merge. Then picks back up at the Baldy Mesa Rd exit. Most is still going up through the Cajon Pass until just before the 138. From there it has been covered by Freeway (I-15) through to Victorville. It picks back up at "D" St and then follows the National Trails Highway to Barstow where it becomes Main St. From the end of Main St, I-40 was built over it but peaks out along the side until you get out to Dagget. It again becomes National Trails Highway. There are signs that mark where Route 66 splits off when I-40 covers Route 66, making it easier to follow. You can follow it, off and on until you get off to go to Amboy. Just make sure you have plenty of gas and good tires. Some of the road is not in good shape. (Be sure to stay on National Trails Highway in Amboy to Goffs Rd, or you will end up riding to I-10). Then you follow Goff Rd north back and go under I-40. Follow Goffs Rd (Marked on the road as Route 66). Now Goffs is at a Railroad crossing. If you watched the movie "Cannonball Run" you will see the store where it was filmed.
Keep following Goffs Rd to 95 Highway North (about 15 miles) and it will have a "T" intersection.
Now this is where you will leave Route 66. To stay on Route 66, you must turn right. But to go to Laughlin, you turn left toward NV. Just across the CA/NV border is 163 on the left. Turn to get to Laughlin.

I try to stay at the Tropicana Express in the front Casino (Adult) Tower.
It over looks Casino Dr and faces the Colorado Bell. I can see the vendors and bikes riding down the street.
Looks great at night with the lights.
But, as has been said, most are already full and high dollar. I am staying my first night in Laughlin (comped).
But Friday night I am staying in Las Vegas. It is just one hour away and a lot cheaper.
Good luck finding a room (without paying through the nose).

I too am looking forward to this trip. It is much needed with friends and the Mrs. Crossing my fingers for great weather. Last years rain and wind made for a less than stellar weekend.
Just do a search. Most of the cool venders are in front of the Edgewater and Colorado Belle. The nicest is (in my opinion) Tropicana Express. They have a cool patio set-up with tons of shade, overlooking Casino road where the bikes (and Cops) roam. It is pretty fun to people watch and check out the bikes and other bafoonery that takes place. They are ways of saving some cash, for example. My group usually rolls to the grocery store and stocks up on essential adult beverage materials right after check in. Make our own drinks in a tumbler in the room and roam the strip. Saves a little on cash at the bars. Also there is a In-n-out burger right next to the Tropicana Express which is good for late night eats. Just a couple ideas......
