How important is steering damper ?

You'd be better off having it on the bike since its potent enough to get the front wheel off the ground during high acceleration and/or high speeds. On bumpy/uneven roads or even off-road surfaces, it can cause the handlebar to wobble and lead to a tankslapper.
I dunno whether the Pan Am has an electronically controlled variable damper.

Steering damper
Ive had steering dampers on most of my bikes. Prevents tank slappers, speed wobbles, keeps steering true in tight turns. The Ohlins one that comes on the Pan America Special is a high end one and adds great value to an amazing machine.
