thumper... the 61 cc bikes had been discontinued at the end of the 1953 season. In 1952 the larger 74 motors cost only 15 bucks more so it was natural that most riders opted for the greater power and torque of 1200cc over 1000cc.
But the 61cc bikes had power and qualities that endeared it to police departments and commercial uses. Its smaller carb and milder cam shaft made it ideal for escort use and use in heavy traffic. Hence the FLE model.
The FLE was introduced in 1953 Hydra-glide models. It designated that the bike was intended for use primarily as a police bike. The "E" designated the motor as being fitted with the "Traffic Combination" version of the 74. This meant it was fitted with the cam and M-61 Linkert carb from the 61 to give the Traffic Combination 74 excellent low speed performance. The Traffic Combination 74 was fitted with the 61 cam and carb for 1953 and 1954 models. For 1955 and 1956 models, Traffic Combination motors were still fitted with the 61's cam shaft but were fitted with the standard M-74B Linkert carb.
