Default 64 needs some TLC

Will start by saying a man must know his limitations have a 57 frame. With 64FL 12volt s/s E carb believe the motor is stroked built by a guy out of NY thy called the beatnik who has passed on .offered the bike from a buddy. Who built it in late 70s early 80s sat under cover in his garage 10 + years jumped on it.#3 first kicker After some wenching and reading soaked rebuilt carb. All gas lines. Flushed tanks.and oils and screen Plugs New battery. She kicked. After carb and clutch adjustment she a runner. And ran strong after riding a while bike not so reliable kicking kicks through kicks me. And when your the only guy kicking everyone is watching has an opinion believe needs a trans or kicker rebuild. Some electrical issues. Or other recommendation Looking for a guy or shop that. Has the experience on older iron. (Not easy) I love this machine and love riding it.and want it to last another 60 years I’m in the NY/ NJ area Orange County wanted to stay closer to home. If possible but will travel any recommendations

would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance

If it is stroked, it's going to be more difficult to kick start. Also how much compression and what cam is in it? Are the spark plugs too cold? But there is a process to learn for kick starting these, not just start kicking it through. Same goes with the carb and learning when and how much enrichener is required from a cold start (sitting overnight etc) or a warn start. In some cases a simple twist of the throttle to activate the accelerator pump to spray a little fuel in the manifold to help start it.

I am always busy but yours being you got it to go already its the acell distributor < can you say - yes its a piece of 500 dollar ****

it does a few things that are causing your issue

at rest retards too much for a Flat side engine to wake up in 3 kicks < will not let you correct that

the trigger inside the distributor is notoriously troublesome when ever it feels like it it will start the engine maybe

you sound handy being you pulled the top end - i would suggest this going forward - finding a electric start distributor OEM that is not worn out is a thing and because the distributor turns in a counterclockwise direction the bolt in an after market distributor ignition is very liminited - don’t trust the china **** at all

we when then the original bars are gone and the left side dist cable is not available surprised it does not have 36 inch apes

you have to buy a re pop dist in and type for an electric start 1965 to 1969 series — then we install Ed’s e 2000 electric ignition to replace the points and get the points one as the other does not have the parts for his ignition

set the timing as he suggest in the directions - some want a bit more timing so its a finesse maybe instead of the line in the center of the hole 1/2 the distance to the back of the hole - PM for phone number call me if you get to this spot and its not behaving

starting is based on how well the acc pump works on the S&S - can send a film if needed we use a razor blade sharp edge to open the slot slightly YOUR FINGERS ARE important pay attention to what your doing if you need to make the thing fan and NOT direct spray - fan is what your looking for 2 1/2 turns out from off spray adjust screw is a good start spot - too much the plugs are not happy and we use a Bosch plug don’t have the number in my head

after saying all the that what you want is an inbetween fix as i am always jammed but can help if you need that is the job we will do above some of the shop stuff

extensive work on the 3 Indians from chassis up to trans overhauls - the 1958 I pan is a chassis up have a 41 knuckle and another 48 pan chassis up and 2 shovels chassis up - all on going at this time but yours is a in and out couple weeks time with no other issues

forgot you have to pull the front head again to replace the distributor

Sound to me like the KS ratchet is worn out.. The easy fix is to rebush the kick start gear but you may need to replace the kick starter gear and kick starter ratchet.

Thank you gentlemen for your time and knowledge / suggestions for a fix for my issue I’m afraid that not sure if I have the maniacal ability to carry out. The tasks. And will learn what I can on above Thinking would want. The. Whole motor and trans gone through to see what is what.how she built and fix anything that is an issue not in any rush or a priority at this point.just don’t want to throw good money away. Or do any damage to the sled because of inexperience honored to own her and show her some respect

Cheap kicker gears put metal sand into the transmission and its becomes a thing at some point

only kicker gears that are worth the money is baker gear set and they don’t give them away but my money they are better then the originals
