Yes, you are right. I've been backwards on many bike I have built, especially if you start adding up the hours spent doing it. How I justify it is changing the value of the hours from "work" to "entertainment".

I'm not sure the difference between Harley parts and Triumph parts. But what I've learned is if my friend wants to restore the bike, and is able to get the bike for $5k to $10k, we should have room. $10 to $15 may be a push or backwards.

I bought a 62 Bonneville basket case for $5k, built it and did ok. But then I bought a 62 BSA A-10 basket case for $1k and ended up backward, (a $600 oil pump blew the budget on that one). Ya just never know, especially on basket cases, cause you can't always know what ya don't have. No more basket cases for me.

I never include hours spent wrenching into the equation. Not exactly therapy, but the satisfaction of bringing a bike back to life.

Yep, if a person wants a vintage anything, but does not want to, doesn't have the time, or is afraid to restore it himself, they're better off finding one already restored. I buy em to restore, for the fun of it, sometimes it gets frustrating, but the more frustrating, makes the accomplishment more rewarding.
