Default 61 panhead winter storage

new 61 panhead owner. i've never owned anything older than a 68 flh. i am now the proud owner of a 61 panhead. Pans rule. anyway i'm getting ready to put it up for winter storage. should i drain the oil or leave it in the oil tank? my thought that the oil may leak past the check ball and fill the crankcase over the winter months open to any suggestions..

My 61 sumps. If you change your oil once a season then its half done if you drain it now. You can shoot oil the cylinders if it makes you feel good but when I bought mine from a long term owner, it sat in his basement for 23 years without any attention and it didn't take much for me to get it running again.

I would leave the oil in the bike. I would add a fuel stabilizer and run the carb dry and that is about it. Knowing that she might sump is half the battle come Spring, then you know to put a pan under your Pan in case she pukes. Good luck.

I don’t treat my Panhead any differently than the Shovels. I just fill the tanks, add fuel stabilizer, put them on a battery tender and forget them ‘till Spring.

They all sump, some worse than others. If mine was a sumper I would dump the oil and fill new in the spring. It will start easier and be less messy.
