Default Motor rebuilds

Great forum!
I have always had harleys, but am getting my first Pan (59) in a couple weeks. - have worked on shovels, don't know a thing about Pans. It will be a total rebuild so I know where I am starting from.
I am still on the fence about sending the motor out vs. taking it down myself. Any referrals and idea of costs of reputable rebuilders that aren't an arm and a leg?
I am not stuck on stock, want a mild cam, supernut the trans... ANY reliability upgrades...

would appreciate any views and referrals!
thanks!

Congratulations on your acquisition. Not much different than a Shovel to work on. It's noisier mechanically, leaks more, and parts are more expensive. If you are only doing the top end, you can do it yourself. Pay close attention to the heads, pans have a problem with the head bolt inserts pulling out, you may need to lap it down. Lower end requires some pricey special tools, so it will probably be cheaper to have it done at a reputable shop. Good luck on that. Most dealership mechanics weren't even born in 59 and have no clue on older bikes.

thanks, i have the manuals on the way (from other posts in the forum).

I would rather have help if I have to crack the cases. Is there anyway to make the heads more bulletproof?
(and as i recall when I went to a mild cam and solid lifters, my shovel top end was pretty noisy).

Stick to a cam that will allow you to use hydraulic lifters, cuts down alot on the lifter noise.
