Default advice on interchangability

doing an old fashion build, working with set of 63 cases, 56 flywheels, rods and shafts, aftermarket cylinders with 8.5:1 pistons and a set of '50 heads. my question is how much interchangability issues that i may run into. is it possible to change top end oiling to external. any do's and don't since i am starting at the beginning would rather avoid any pitfalls that i can.

Can't help much but check with some shops in your area, not New Dealers but private shops the older guys know a lot and are usually willing to give info. Most of the dealerships have good tech's but they only know current stuff.

I bought a Frankenstein 57 pan. It has 50 heads that were changed over to outside oilers. Not very well either. The previous owner pipe tapped the heads for the outside oil lines that he ran from the cam cover. He used a variety of pipe fittings to make it work. You will have to change yours over to use them. The 63 cases don't support inside oiling. I would try to swap them out with a set of latter heads rather than drill a set of good original heads. Check your cylinders to make sure they have the hole drilled in the lower part of the cylinder for the oil return. The early cylinders drained through the cases and had a corresponding drain hole in the case top. If you use early style cylinders and outside oiling, plug the feed hole in the cylinders.
