Hi
I have just built a bobber, it has:
S&S p-series panhead, with superstock ignition 93 cu in
8.2:1 compression ratio.
Primary belt 1.5 inch
Kick only
Harley 4 speed transmission
S&S super E carb
I cant start it.
I have checked the carb settings
The timing is good
A few times I have managed to start it, but after about 200 kicks.
Then I rode it 16 miles & the oil temp was 250 degrees (with 20-50 syn oil)
it runs good though
My questions:
Is this engine too big for kickstarting?
Should I send it back to S&S?
93 cu in w/ the compression you posted is fine. What start up sequence are you using? A well tuned pan w/S&S usually only needs a couple of kicks cold w/ ignition off and one or two once the ignition is on. Not sure about E series but the B series do not like a lot of extra throttle, just about 1/8 inch, during start ups.
I agree with Panz4ever. you've got a low compression so the 93 shouldn't be an issue. I've run a B on mine and am running an E right now. 2 or 3 kicks with it cold. If you're kicking more than 6 kicks somethings wrong. What size idle jet is in the carb? If you bought the carb from S&S the set up idle tube/main jet setup should be on the side of the box. When I start mine I give it 2 or three pumps with the throttle and pull the enrichner up. E's are like B's, not much throttle unless flooded. You may need to reset the accelerator pump.
