Default pan questions

ive recently taken my 1950 pan to a man to fix some leaks..it has been converted to a belt drive, the original chain oiler was plugged off.. he said this cant happen the eng needs to breathe so he ran a hose out of the primary for a vent...is this normal ????...he also told me i need an oil pump becuase my oil pump is not returning all of the oil back to the tank causing some my leaking problems....does this sound normal????? just some things i would like a second opinion on

If the oiler/vent was plugged, that would cause crankcase pressure to build thus causing leaks everywhere and also affects the scavenging of the oil out of the crankcase.

tadams...definitely you need the vent. Just connect a hose to the vent and run it to the rear of the bike. And for your wrench's infornation, not all of the oil is/should return to the tanks. Until 65 MoCo operated on a constant loss system. 65 pans were the first with the outer aluminum to suck oil from the primary back to the oil tank. With the tin and a chain, part of the oil was used to lubricate the primary chain and fall/drip on the ground (hence the term, Harleys always mark their spot).

I say vent it first and run it to see what happens. Almost seems as if he does not know a great deal about older bikes or he does and assumes you do not and is trying to get more money by selling you an expensive fix you may not/do not need.

Good luck on finding coil covers leave them exposed or paint them As for the engine vent I run a hose off the engine vent (after I take off the 90 degree to the old chain ) I drilled a 3/4 in hole through the inner primary (about half way between the front engine pulley and the clutch basket ) I put a 1/2 in copper 90 degree inside the clear hose so no kinks occur then run the lose up the vertical frame tube under the seat I put on a 3/8 unifilter and surround it with 1 1/2 pvc pipe cut to length This pvc covering will kind of keep the oil from turning chocolate after running in the rain Are you confused ? I am but it does work My 46 knuck and my 52 pan/shovel (prim belts) use this system
