Default gas tank problems

I have a 48pan head with 51 tanks ( 3.5 gal and through the tank shut off ) and an early swing arm frame. My tanks have started weeping at the bottom near the seat. Does any one know if there is a 5 gal tank with the through the tank shut off? What year tank would that be? I have had this bike since 79 and I am used to the old style. I am in Chicago area and will put more miles on the bike this year. But I will need a new tank for spring.

To the best of my knowledge 65 was the only year for the 5 gallon thru-the-tank gas shut-off valve. (Have them on my 65). Not sure how common the OEM tanks are though.

Guess you can probably get some aftermarket ones guaranteed to look and fit like crap (see Taiwan Ted or J&P Cycles). Better yet just stick with what sounds like OEM 3.5 gallon ones and fix them while the weather is bad. Any good machine shop can do it.

H-D used five-gallon tanks with a shut-off rod for 1965 only. Left-hand tank: #61229-65 (5 gal, foot shift). Right-hand tank: #61202-65 (5 gal). And my 1958-1968 H-D catalog also lists a separate part number for the shut-off rod for those five-gallon tanks: #62033-65.

For the 1966 Big Twin, H-D used a male fuel tap under the front of the right-hand tank. Then for 1967, the same tap was relocated to the left-hand tank but more toward the rear. For 1975, the tap changed from male to female. Eric

Another thing to consider if you find the 1965 tanks is the fork stop on the lower tree is different betweent he two tanks. If you use the earlier lower tree you run the risk of denting the tanks.
