Default vin numbers

Hi to all, thinking of finding a pan project but want to be careful not to get a bogus vin number on the motor. I'm trying to find what year Harley changed the style of numbers, from the staight style 6 or 9 to the later curved style, thanks again Billy

I don't think a pan has those style numbers Hour glass 8's etc This style goes into the shovel era We called this style shear cut numbers As I remember the 6's had stright backs as well as the 9's no curves on the tail pieces

Billy, authenticating Harley serial numbers can get complicated. Panhead serial numbers that were factory-stamped usually have a certain type of straight-back 6/9 for 1948-1958 and 1963-1965. For 1959-1962 you may run across the straight-back 6/9 as well as the round-back 6/9. And apart from the two styles of 6/9, other things also happened for 1961-1962. Furthermore, you'll often find at least two things changed for 1963 and you'll often find a certain type of sans serif 4 in the year portion for 1964.

And are you aware of the even/odd code Harley used for 1960s serial numbers?

If you're planning on buying a certain year Panhead, let me know and I'll post a partial example of a serial number for that year. Or if you're already checking out a particular bike you could post a photo showing most, but not all, of the serial number and we can give you an opinion on it.

And you can also check the belly numbers and the type of crankcases to see if they are consistent with the serial number. Eric
