Default Letter E in belly numbers

Hi there, recently I acquired a 1940 EL knucklehead with factory stamped vin (I checked it looks 100% legit) and belly numbers that have a letter "E" instead of "-" between the year and casting number. It goes as follows: vin 40EL3951 and belly numbers 40E3924. They are absolutely clean, no grind, no sandblasting, entire bike 95% original. Can anyone please explain what that E represents? I found a similar E in belly numbers of another 1940 knuckle on vintageamericanmotorcycles.com website - it looks exactly like mine (not the same numbers of course)

Best place for the answer is go to www.caimag.com Intro yourself and then post away. The site you mentioned is owned by a very knowledgeable person (Chris Haynes) who is a regular on that site.

How a bout a pic of the bike?

Thanks, I will try that. In fact it was one of his pictures that had the belly number like mine.
