oil pressure problems
helloooo out there===========i got problems. just finished up a 51 pan. machine shop motor and a new repo pump. started up engine and had 30-35 psi on gauge.as motor warms up it drops to 0==if i goose it a little it will go to around 8----as it gets warmer it gets worse. at around 35-40 mph i have 0, and it will not come up. this motor is in a 72 flh frame and i'm useing the oil tank that came with that year.===could i be starving the pump and not getting enough oil to it?
seems to me its the same tank they had in 58 so i dont know if there is something diff. or not. i'v been working on bikes along time and never had this happen before.*****main question is,,,how could i have 35 psi cold and within less then a mile loose it all.i'm running 70-w hd oil. i can tell the oil is returning because its a little foamy. any ideas ???????????
pepper 352-303-7418 thanks

Are you sure your oil gage is good. ot sure if it was on this forum or another that folks were discussing oil pressure gages and that many of them were junk.
I run 60 wt in my pans and drop it to 50 in winter. Might change it to 60 to start with since it is a new build. Pans do not use much oil pressure though
You have verified that oil is returning to your tank. There is a cap screw on the right side of OEM pump body. That comes off and allows access to an adjustment screw that I think should be about 3/8' from the end.
Other thought... do you have a list of the parts your builder used to put the pump together. Springs in the pump body went through a couple of changes over the pan years. Maybe verify correct spring was used,

Hellooooo from fl.
making headway on oil problem======i took it all apart and checked things.couldnt remember if i put screw in pinion shaft, then questioned every thing i did,,,,every thing was perfect. SO,,,,i went back to the start of what i thought was wrong in the first place. CAN YOU BELIVE THIS !!!!! i'am starving the pump somehow,,,,,,,,,,the oil cant get to pump fast enough,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,drained oil and removed hose,i could see through it when held up to lite.tank was boiled before paint so its NOT STOPPED UP.put new hose on tank and had it draining into pan======added 2qts oil to tank.
this what sucks !!! there wasn't enough oil coming out of hose to feed pump.it was a 1972 tank and 1951,new pump(as far as i know it was the same tank from 58-72+) both use 3/8 hose so it shouldn't matter.started off with 20-50 to break in,,,,,at first i thought oil was to thin so changed to HD-70==did the same thing, when machine is cool and above idle its got 25-30 psi ????? it takes about 1/2 mi. to use oil thats in pump and feed line, then its gone==no oil pressure.....lost suction.(i've been a plumber for 50yrs and know if you loose supply the ball game is over) just can't understand why its draining out hose so slow,i've got 3 shovel-heads with same tank and NEVER had this problem.i'll send you a pix of how much comes out of hose if i had your e-mail address.will let you know what i find out pepper

With the engine running pull the return hose to the oil tank See if you have flow after this pan warms up the return will look slow almost a pulse type flow of oil this is OK Also make sure the tank is vented
