The area where you posted a pic looks like an excellent place to get the shifting and stopping down before taking it too far out on the road.

You have a manual advance for the timer (left side of the bars with a wire that attaches to the timer itself). Cold starts it is easier to retard about half way; just remember to advance the timer once it starts.

Good for you to get your pop's bike. Keep it, run it forever, and then pass it down to your kids.

One thing I am looking at here....The traditional foot clutch/tank shift design used a toe/heel shifter to engage/disengage tranny in order to shift. The addition of the booster clutch (mousetrap design) of 53 eliminated the need for the tank shift. What I do not see in the pic you show of the left side is the traditonal clutch assembly. Looks like your dad modified it.
