Exactly how I did my gauntlet fairing with the Rust-Oleum flat...came out great but not a perfect match.

Well here's a bit of a story.....my bike has an aftermarket front fender that was painted by the previous owner, an ok but not great denim black match....I then purchased a gauntlet fairing that I painted with rustoleum flat and while it came out great...again not a perfect match, so I decided to repaint the fender and fairing...based on recommendations, I went for the John Deere paint, I did not yet buy any cans from Harley.. I ended up being able to get only one can of the "original" (white label) John Deere Blitz black....I ordered two cans of what I thought was the same from a farm supply company because they were using the picture of the same old cans but when I got them they were the new yellow labeled ones...anyway I did have enough in the one can to do both, they came out great and appear to be a great match if not dead on....I cant verify at this time because as it turns out i happened to drop my bike off at the dealer for warranty work that i'm still waiting to be completed (don't get me started) so I can't check the pieces against the rest of the bike now, just going off pics but it looks much closer than the previous shades if not dead on....I told you this was a story lol...

like a bonehead I put a small blemish on the front fender handling it so I decide to repaint it (shoulda left it alone, nobody would have seen it ever).....since I laid down quite a few decent coats of the first can it was practically empty, so in fear of running out of paint mid coat I figured i'd try to paint just the fender with one of the "new" cans, but like Cep10sg said the new JD Blitz black is nothing like the old one....MUCH more shiny not a flat finish at all....no good...anyway I take the leap and I was able to do a couple of light coats with the original can and got it back to where it was but at this point the can is virtually empty.....Made it through ok right?????.....not so fast lol!!!

So i'm grabbing the fairing the other day to take a pic to show someone and it was like a stupid freak thing but I bump it as i'm moving it and again I see a faint mark....(it's just not my week) IDK maybe the fact that I was in the yard enjoying some frosty beverages didn't help either lol but now its the second time i'm dealing with a blemish...I could not believe my luck and stupidity!!! Needless to say I was pissed lol.....(again I should have left it, noboby but me would have noticed but i'm nuts)...so now i'm in a predicament....I have a drop of paint left in the original can...like it's practically empty....I have the two "new" worthless cans of the JD black, so I go for broke and attempt to spray the fairing with whats left. I barely managed to get a spit coat on it. It covered the blem but I think my previous coat looked alot better. What can I do at this point, I cannot find another old style can ANYWHERE!!!

I think i'm going to see how close of a match it is to the rest of the bike when I get it back this week, if its not dead on, i'm going to buy a can of the Harley Denim Black and do a test piece, if it matches better i'll repaint both yet again!!!! lol

Lesson learned, don't drink and handle freshly painted pieces!!!
