To do it right you need access to the back side. That means cutting it open, doing the metal work then welding it closed. Do that or buy a new tank...that's all.

Get the stud gun also with a little creativity after you get most of the dent out with the stud gun you can dolly more out going through the filler neck with a homemade dolly finished off with a skim coat of filler

if you look, you can find tanks for $100 on ebay or swap meets.. you are going to need paint anyway.

Yeah I the real project here is getting rid of those awful flames (just got the bike) and the dent might as well go with them.

I did try the pops a dent (glue thing) and that was a waste of $20 and an hour of my time. Heat gun and canned air was a waste of an hour and $18. Can't really reach it well enough through the gas gauge hole, and I am not going to cut the tank open. I think the stud welder is about as far as I am going to take this, since I have never welded anything before

the stud welder isn't really WELDING you just heat bond the stud to bare metal ------------------you have to be careful doing that because of the heat involved. If you get to many in a small area and you aren't careful you can pull holes in heavy metal----------------in my experience if the glue doesn't work then you can also be in trouble with a stud gun. From your post I think you might be trying to get things done in a marginal fashion unless your canned air was left over co2 from your keg party

Fill the tank full of water and put it in the freezer. The ice will expand and fix that dent easy.

I've heard theres a really good chance of destroying the tank that way. Have you used that method yourself? I may be willing to try, although my freezer is full so that's a hassle
