I grew up repairing rust in an Ohio body shop and I can tell you that removing every last trace of the rust is the most important step in the repair process.

And like someone else already mentioned, a sandblaster or the like has no place around a fully assembled motorcycle.
Thanks for that tip. It was the part I was concerned with. Any residual rust will render the project a waste of time. Can you tell me what type of acid? (ie phosphoric, nitric, citric)

An auto paint supply store should be able to set you up.

I've always used DuPont 5717 Metal Conditioner for removing minor corrosion and etching the surface for primer.

For removing more severe or deeply pitted rust I've used muriatic acid. Muriatic is very strong and you need to be cautious.

i dont think any dealer would touch the rust.. all it needs is a little sandpaper or a grinder with a wire wheel.. clean it off and paint with gloss black Rustoliem..

You and me both. Ohio rust is a bitch. My most important tool was an Acetylene torch.
