Default Lubricating the clutch cable

I just started doing my own maintenance on my '03 Fatboy (carbureted).

I purchased a can of Cable Life to lubricate the cables. I also purchased the Cable Life Cable Luber.

When I loosened the clutch cable as far as it would go, I only had about an inch of cable between the clevis and the protective cover. I was unable to use the cable luber because of this.

My question is, should I have been able to have gotten more cable showing between the clevis and the cover?

I ended up just lubricating the cable without the lubing tool and it seems to have worked out fine. I'm just curious.

This is a link to Cable Life if you are not familiar with the tool.
Here

Thanks for the info!

Default RE: Lubricating the clutch cable

Copied this off the Tech section of this Forum. It was posted by TCSTD.

There's been a few questions asked about lubrication of the clutch cable and the clutch handle on our bikes. For some who have never done this, it's an easy service job to do.

Start by collapsing the cable adjuster in the clutch cable. After doing that you remove the "C" clip that holds the pivot pin in place in the clutch handle perch, Don't let this clip fly or you'll never find it again. Once the pin is removed, slide it out of the perch and the handle can be removed along with the cable by sliding it through the slot in the perch . Lubricate the pin and the sides of the handle where it makes contact inside the perch. While you're in there, lubricate the cable also. I like to use DRI SLIDE found ..HERE

Reverse this procedure to re assemble and adjust the free play in the clutch handle to 1/16" - 1/8" and you're done. You may take the time at this point to include a clutch adjustment down in the derby cover also covered elsewhere in this forum... HERE and... HERE

I did all that, my question is how much actual cable should be visible between the eyelet and the rubber cable coating? I could only get about an inch and I'm wondering if I should be able to get more.

The link I included, shows the Lubricating tool being placed between the eyelet and the rubber. That may give you some idea of what I mean. I didn't have enough cable to use the tool.

Thanks again.

Grab ahold of the eyelet with a pair of plyers and pull it out far enough to get the lube tool in.

Thanks for the info. I'll try that next time. I ended up just lubing the heck out of it anyway and it seems to have done the trick. I just didn't know how hard I should be pulling on the cable.

I've just started doing my own maintenance. So, I'm still not sure how to do everything correctly but I enjoy learning anyway.

If your talking about fitting the luber in between the eyelet and the cable jacket{I think you are] you can get enough room by going into the primary and loosen the nut,11/16" and turn adjuster, good luck,Bob
