I have a 06 Delux and I got a deal in a custom 1-1/2 70T belt pulley and was wondering if anyone has changed the 1-1/8 belt over to a wider belt. If so is there any clearance issues? Also thinking of performing a complete motor overhaul next year to get 105 torque and 105 HP. Would the 1-1/8 belt handle the torque?
Well I may have the answer in a few weeks. I just did not want to pay for a belt andpull the primary if someone already knows that there is not enough clearance. I have to service the bike soon so if noone knows I will just try it.
Sorry it took so long to post my findings but I have added a chrome swing arm and custom paint while I tore down the bike. A wide belt and pully can be installed but the clearance is way to tight for comfort. The pulley needs to be offset by 3/4 inch towards the primary in order to have the belt run true. This buts the drive pulley thousands of an inch away from the swing arm so close that a business card cannot fit. The belt also has close tolerances clearing the primary, the inner fender would also need to be modified to keep from rubbing the belt. Since the transmission pulley is likely to tighten up when the bike gets hot I did not run the bike so as not to damage the belt.
The belt and pulley probably can be run but the clearance was just to close to try. Bottom line do not try it unless you plan on changing to a wider swingarm and offsetting the transmition pulley.
Lot of effort and time to find out it would not work
I have a wide belt on my older 99 King. The newer bikes use the 1-1/8 belt and some use a 3/4" belt. Both narrower belts are supposed to be stronger then the older wider belts. If your looking for strength you'll need to go to a rear chain. Your 1-1/8" should handle the 105 power with no probs, a lot of bikes are running 120 power with that belt and no problems.
