Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have an 05 FXDL with a 95" kit, little bit of head work & compression releases as well as an HD high torque starter. I keep on eating starter clutches, any recommendations on a better one to switch to or where to look for problems on why?
When you say "... eating starter clutches." are you meaning that the starter clutch is not staying engaged long enough to properly start the bike, or is it chewing up the internals of the clutch from being slammed out and not slipping on the ring gear...
If it is the 1st one, then more than likely the little ball bearing is missing from the starter clutch assy... Seen it quite a few times... Techs forget to reinstall the ball bearing and after a while the starter will begin to disengage prior to achieving proper engine speed, and the overrun clutch disengages...
If #2, then it could be lack of lube, bad jackshaft, bent jackshaft bolt....
A stock starter can turn 95", 10:1 no problem.... and if you are using the MCR's, that puppy should be turning over easily....

seems like after about 6 months when I go to start it I get a whining sound before it engages. I stopped at the local dealer & one of the techs told me its definitely the starter clutch thats making the whining sound & that I dont have too many starts left.
